Workstream Enterprise has been designed to take advantage of the latest standards and technologies, with a clear eye on the future as well as the past. It comprises a full rapid application development environment, a process execution engine, and run-time business process activity monitoring tools.

Workstream Enterprise provides:

• the Business Process Modelling Notation (BPMN) standard: a complete and rich approach to modelling processes using "business-level" building blocks. BPMN allows business users to describe processes in terms they understand.

• an intuitive drag-and-drop interface: metaphors familiar to business users, such as flowcharts, forms and spreadsheets, allow them to map and simulate processes quickly and easily.

• an in-built Business Activity Monitoring tool. Real-time monitoring of current activity supports more effective management of existing operations. Sophisticated analysis of detailed audit trails allows bottlenecks and opportunities for process redesign to be identified. And best-guess estimates for how long each part of a process will take can be plugged in to the model to give a feel for the efficiency of new or revised processes

Workstream's code also makes use of the latest generation of open technologies:

• a J2EE-based run-time environment, using Enterprise Java Beans (EJB)

• compatibility with J2EE servers such as WebSphere, WebLogic and JBoss

• full access to third party EAI tools and databases through J2EE-based interfaces (JDBC, EJB), as well as connectors which allow data to be extracted from legacy systems without the need for programming

• Web Services, including support for XML, HTTP, HTTPS, POP3 and SMTP

• automatic detection to support deployment on PDAs as well as desktop web browsers
